FAQ | About Al, Feline Epilepsy & EpilepticAl.com
πΎ Frequently Asked Questions
1. Who was Al, and why is the shop named after him?
Al was a brave and beautiful white cat from Cullman, Alabama, born in April 2021. He lived with epilepsy and inspired many with his strength and gentle personality. After Al passed away in August 2023, his mom created EpilepticAl.com to keep his memory alive, raise awareness about epilepsy, and share her love of cats through meaningful merchandise.
2. What is feline epilepsy?
Feline epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes cats to experience recurrent seizures. These episodes can involve unconsciousness, twitching, drooling, loss of balance, or uncontrolled body movements.
Seizures in cats may be caused by:
- Metabolic problems (e.g., liver or kidney disease)
- Brain disorders (injury, tumors, or inflammation)
- Exposure to toxins or medications
- Unknown causes (idiopathic epilepsy)
When no clear cause can be found, the condition is called primary (idiopathic) epilepsy, which is the kind Al had.
3. What does a feline epileptic seizure look like?
There are two main types of seizures in cats:
- Partial (focal) seizures: Affect only part of the brain and cause localized twitching, such as in one limb or one side of the face.
- Generalized (grand mal) seizures: Affect the entire brain, leading to loss of consciousness, full-body jerking, drooling, vocalizing, and sometimes urination or defecation.
Seizures usually have three phases:
- Prodrome β changes in behavior before a seizure
- Ictus β the seizure itself
- Post-ictal β confusion, pacing, or tiredness after the seizure
If you notice any of these symptoms, consult a veterinarian immediately.
4. Can feline epilepsy be treated or controlled?
Yes, many cats live happy lives with proper treatment. Vets may prescribe antiepileptic medications, monitor progress, and adjust dosages as needed. Some cats respond very well to treatment, while others require long-term care and frequent monitoring.
Al took three medications three times a day, and near the end of his life, he sometimes went a full month without a major seizure β a big success in his journey.
5. Does every cat with epilepsy respond the same way?
No. Each βEpiKittyβ (epileptic cat) is different. Some respond quickly to treatment, while others require multiple medications or adjustments. Some cats even go long stretches without seizures and may be able to taper off medication under veterinary supervision.
